We're all feeling the pinch, right? From exorbitant telecommunication bills to the general struggles of student life. It can feel like everywhere is just trying to choke the life out of you. But here's the thing: amidst all the chaos, there's still room to thrive.
It's time to shift the narrative from "e choke" to "I am taking control of my destiny". This semester, we're challenging you to LEVEL UP!
We know being a student is tough and all, but it comes with its own perks. The university environment is a hub of opportunities - from academic resources to extracurricular activities, networking events, and more. Each institution has a treasure trove of opportunities waiting to be UNLOCKED by YOU!
So, how do YOU harness these opportunities?
Get familiar with campus resources: There are various centres depending on your interests that provide workshops, mentorship programs, counselling sessions and more! Explore these places, and don’t be shy to make enquiry. Let me provide you with some of these resources;
NITHUB Unilag: The NitHub is a Tech Innovation hub focused on talent upskilling, product development, startup incubation, and acceleration. Here’s a breakdown of a variety of their programs.
The Incubation Program, which is designed to support bold innovators with expert mentorship, resources, networking and funding opportunity.
The Hackathon focused on AI Driven Healthcare Solutions.
The AI Literacy Workshop, which is an event that dived into the world of AI, how to understand it, and how to leverage it.
The Nitdev Program, which is a program designed for those who want to begin their tech journey. They offer beginner-friendly courses designed to teach both technical and soft skills, provide mentorship, and support all the way.
Collaborations with companies to offer paid internships to capable students.
LASU Innovation Hub: AKA the Centre of Excellence for Entrepreneurship Innovation, is a world-class facility where students, researchers, and entrepreneurs can transform ideas into impactful solutions.
AI Research Centre, LASUSTECH: This is a pioneering AI research facility build to advance technological innovation.
CCTRIS, College of Medicine, Unilag: The Centre for Clinical Trials, Research, and Implementation Science is an innovative research hub geared towards investigating issues in population health and well-being from a globally acceptable perspective with local and sustainable impact in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.
ICT Skills Lab, YabaTech: This is a digital academy for Computer and Phone repairs, Website Development, and Mobile App Development. They provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment for increased participation of students in STEM fields.
MADHOUSE, Unilag: The MADhouse, aptly named ‘Make A Difference House’, is an innovative incubator dedicated to the discovery of creative talents across Africa, and nurturing of raw ideas and art into products.
NORD Automobiles: NORD is a facility that deals with assembling new automobiles, making drones, and giving students relevant hands-on training.
AFRETEC: The African Engineering and Technology Network (AFRETEC) is a pan-African collaboration of technology-focused universities, aimed to promote inclusive digital transformation in Africa, through collaboration in teaching, learning, research, and entrepreneurship.
Join Student Organizations: Find groups that align with your passions and interests. We have communities like the Junior Chamber International Nigeria, The Rotary Club of Lagos, the Project Managers Guild, the Engineering Career Expo, the Google Developers Student Club, the LASU Debate Society, the Blockchain Club, Unilag, The Investment Society, Excel Minds, the Impact Leaders Club, and many more. They are a great way to build connection, skills, and most importantly, create unforgettable memories. You can also consider joining MSSN across all institutions for a blend of programs that develop you spiritually, academically, and morally.
Attend Seminars and Events: Learn from industry experts, network with peers, and stay updated on trending topics with events like the Academic Counseling Seminar, The Student Career Fair, The Lagos State Career Expo, Professor Ayodele Awojobi Design Competition, The Colloquium, TEDx Lagos, the Accounting and Entrepreneurship Summit for Students, and lots of other really insightful events.
